Adoption Fees Explained
One of the most common questions we’re asked at SPCA Baccalieu Trail is: “What is included in the adoption fee?”
Let us explain!
Whenever an animal enters the shelter, a few things must happen first!
A physical examination from a veterinarian
Just to see if there is anything concerning that might need medical attention!
Vaccine and Parasite Treatments
This includes Flea/Tick prevention, de-wormer & vaccination.
FIV/FeLV testing
A simple blood work is performed to test cats for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV).
ASPCA Behavioural Assessment
We’ll assess the temperament and behaviours of dogs entering the shelter to help them find a family that best suits their unique personalities.
Spay & Neuter
We’ll bring the pet to a veternarian clinic for their spay and neuter surgery.
Microchip
The microchip will be inserted during the spay/neuter appointment. These chips are a great way to help reunite lost pets with their families. Check out our microchip article to learn more.
A whole lot of cuddles!
This one is self explanatory!
Our adopted pets will be sent home with a Pet Passport which includes their microchip number and medical history. We’re also excited that Trupanion has a free 30 day pet insurance promotion for adopted pets!
Let’s compare the adoption fee (in the image above) versus the approximate cost for an owner to purchase all of the above mentioned medical care on their own!
Why does SPCA Baccalieu Trail charge an adoption fee? All of the care mentioned in this article costs a lot of money! Collecting adoption fees not only helps us cover some of these cost, but adoption fees help ensure we have funding available to help the next pet in need. 🖤
